SharePoint and Hardware Load Balancer

For the last couple of weeks I have been running into issues with Hardware Load Balancers and SharePoint... One thing I have learned is turn on affinity so your sessions stick that way a user will stay on the same server throughout their session.  I know by doing this you will not have a perfect 50/50 split on traffic it will be closer to 45/55 but one thing you will gain is consistency.  By having consistency you will avoid those "intermittent" errors where one user will complain something doesn't work while others say it works just fine or "it worked before but now it doesn't"

Joel Oleson has a post on his blog about Hardware Load Balancing that I found to be very helpful!!  NLB (Network Load Balancing) and SharePoint... Troubleshooting and Configuration tips

64-bit and 32-bit mixed SharePoint Environments

In my first blog I said "You can mix 32-bit and 64-bit. By that I mean you can have a 32-bit MOSS and a 64-bit SQL back end".  I thought I would never see a mixed front end.  At a client of ours I recently saw 4 64-bit front end servers clustered together with a 5th server on its own that is 32-bit that is running off of the same SQL server.  They still had a need to for the software that could only run on 32 bit and hasn't been upgraded to run on 64.  I was quite skeptical since I was not sure how SharePoint would like that but in dealing with that type of environment all week I have not been able to find a single issue with it!  I'm still not sure I would recommend since it seems a little out there but the setup seems to run just fine.  I am starting to see how versatile SharePoint 2007 really is the more and more I see and hear how companies are setting up their 2007 environment.   Just remember this one thing,  "Just because you can, doesn't mean you should"

FBI Tries to fight zombie hordes

The title caught my eye and found it interesting that there are that many people out there that do not know what is going on inside their own computers!!

SharePoint 2007 and KnowledgeLake's Conversion Application

I know I know it has been quite some time since my last post but hey I'm posting now so get over it    :-)

Now that SharePoint 2007 has been out for a few months now what do you think:  Good?  Bad?  I personally really like the new MOSS and WSS the features they added are great yes yes I know there are plenty of stuff that I don't like about it either much like the 50 million document limit per Index Server.  I know the 50 million document limit may sound quite high but in our world that is very attainable and can get there real quick especially now that we have a kick ass Conversion application!  Good Job Steve and Russ!  I got to see the application in action yesterday pulling over ~35,000 documents with Annotations and the metadata from 1 work station in a single hour from the FileNet IDM desktop for Content Services and Yes it does work for Image Services as well.  This application was written to pull documents from just about any Imaging repository you can think and yes that does include those that are homegrown.
